As I study the book of Nehemiah, I notice his character: devotion and obedience to God, compassion on his fellow man, reverence, humility and an intuitive leader. God’s hand was on him because he put God first in every circumstance.
Reverence/Humility:

A wise and faithful governor Nehemiah bravely stood upon guard against the attacks of his enemies abroad. And he gave as much attention to the grievances at home, having kept it from being destroyed by their enemies, he also wanted to keep it from being destroyed by themselves.
He listened. He listen to the complaints of the poor and the great hardship of which the rich force them into borrowing money. He took great care in both reform and oppression, as well as to relieve the oppressed. He set a good example from self and showed great compassion and tenderness towards his people.
