1 Samuel 15-16

1 Samuel 16: 1

And the Lord said him to Samuel, how long will the mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from the reign over Israel? Fill the horn with the oil, and go, I will send the to Jesse the Beth- lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

Reflection

So God has rejected Saul as king of Israel. Because once again a champion that he had chosen, has failed him. Unable to obey a simple command. And at first you think it’s because Saul thought he was doing good. He thought he was doing some thing that would please Lord in his eyes. But then you find the underlying truth…

1 Samuel 16:6-7 NIV

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord. But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

1 Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

We see God choosing those who his people would not see as a chosen one.

Because God knows what is in our heart.

Leading up to Saul’s fall from God he is confused. Thinking he is doing what is right, he acts on it. Saul looses his trust and faith in the Lord. Most of all he disobeys God. Burnt offerings and sacrifices don’t work in Saul’s favor.

God wants obedience and trust.

Title: The First Heart

Verse:

[1 Samuel 15:22] And Samuel said, The LORD loves burnt offerings and other sacrifices as he loves to hear his voice: for obedience is better than sacrifice, and hearing is better than the fat of rams.

Discovery:

God says that obedience is better than sacrifice. Samuel reminds Saul of his first moment of calling and points out that he is not living according to God's word, but Saul's conscience is seared and he continues to lie. His humble beginnings are nowhere to be found. He just lists the things he can do as king.

Realization:

The most dangerous thing I can do to God is to loose my first heart. If I lose my first…
